What Is Criminal Tampering?

Criminal tampering involves tampering with the property of another with the intent to cause injury, inconvenience or annoyance to that person. Most often, criminal tampering is charged as a class two misdemeanor.

If the act occurs in relation to the property of a past or present intimate partner, however, the offense will be charged as a domestic violence offense. Upon conviction, an offender can face up to one year in the county jail and a requirement that he or she complete a treatment program and treatment evaluation conforming with the standards adopted by the Domestic Violence Offender Management Board.

Criminal tampering also may involve making an unauthorized connection to a utility such as public service, or a telephone or internet provider. This is also a class 2 misdemeanor carrying up to one year in the county jail.
