Widespread use of "Molly" creating concerns for DEA

When Miley Cyrus performed her hit song "We Can't Stop" at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month, several of her lyrics were omitted from the broadcast, especially her line "We like to party, dancing with molly."

iCyrus wasn't talking about a BFF or even a human person. Instead, she was making a tongue in cheek reference to a new party drug that has taken concerts and music festivals by storm. A number of recording artists refer to the drug in their songs, including Kanye West, Nicki Manaj and Danny Brown. Aside from the catchy sayings in song lyrics, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is becoming very concerned about how many people are using molly.

The nickname is essentially a short version of the drug's scientific name, Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), which is commonly referred to as molecule, or the "pure" form of MDMA. It is commonly used in the drug, Ecstacy, but unlike this drug, molly is not pressed into a pill form with anything else, so users do not have other drugs (such as caffeine or methamphetamines) mixed in.

Molly is listed as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning that it is highly addictive, and has no accepted use for medical treatment. Naturally, exact numbers of users are unclear, but the dangers are. The third day of the New York's Electric Zoo concert was cancelled after two concertgoers died and several others were hospitalized. Moreover, users tend to be younger, especially teenagers and college students.

With these concerns, it is expected that the DEA will incorporate crackdowns (much like what was done to combat the meth outbreak) on molly.
